They say that old habits die hard, but could new habits keep you young? Sure, we get set in our ways as we age, but with age comes wisdom, and shouldn’t some of that wisdom include discovering ways to stay younger? We’re all looking for ways to turn back the clock, so why not start with some of the simplest ones? Here are a few easy lifestyle habits that may help you to slow the aging process with minimal effort.

Adopt A Pet

Would you buy a dog if it meant you could live longer? Researchers think owning a dog might just be the key to a more active life and a lower risk of heart disease. Eric Goedereis, PhD says, “Dog owners who walk their dogs are more likely to meet recommendations for daily physical activities.” He adds that owning a pet can reduce stress, another factor which may decrease likelihood of heart disease. 

More Sex

Hopefully, you can convince your partner this is not just a ruse to get him or her into bed. Studies show a link between longer life and orgasms. According to a 1997 study, men who had more orgasms were at lower risk for heart disease than those who were a little less passionate. Although it can’t be proven as to whether healthier people have more sex, or if sex actually makes people healthier, Goederis says, “(Sex) gives us the opportunity to work out nearly every muscle in the body and connect with another person. Sex has also been shown to boost the body’s immune response, reduce stress, and even control one’s appetite.”

Daily Flossing

Could a piece of string help you stay younger? Apparently, flossing not only rids teeth of trapped food, it also removes the film of bacteria that builds up before it hardens into plaque, something brushing alone can’t do. Lack of flossing can lead to periodontal disease which can trigger mild inflammation and increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.  The American Dental Association suggests flossing at least once a day to keep oral bacteria at bay.

Eat Nuts

No, this is not your license to start a candy bar diet, but eating nuts can be a very easy way to stay young. According to a 2013 study in a New England Journal of Medicine, people who ate nuts several times a week had a lower mortality rate than those who ate fewer nuts or none at all. As for your method of consumption, a sprinkling over yogurt or a handful midday may be a better choice than the office vending machine.

Cup of Joe

More good news from the Java world! Turns out coffee not only wakes you up in the morning, it reduces your risk of disease. According to Joe Gans, MD, “Drinking coffee may decrease your risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.” However, don’t overdo it. Too much caffeine can lead to insomnia, anxiety, and can even interfere with the calcium absorption in your bones. Also remember to hold off on the whipped toppings. Creams and syrups can cancel out the health benefits.
